Allan Wasmuth Obituary

Allan (Andy) Wasmuth, age 99, formerly of Dayton, passed away on April 12, 2018. Born in Huntington, Indiana, on November 16, 1918, Andy worked from an early age to assist his family during the Depression (among his jobs: caddy, butcher shop assistant, magazine distributor, factory worker) and put himself through Miami University, graduating in 1941. An infantry lieutenant in World War II, he received a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for his service as a forward observer in Europe. Following the war, Andy settled in Dayton, marrying artist and children’s book author Eleanor Turner. He built a successful accounting business and was the devoted father of four children. After his retirement in 1987, Andy and Eleanor relocated to Vermont and Arizona before finally settling in Oxford, Ohio. He and Eleanor were adventurous travelers, making numerous visits to Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the American West. With Andy at the wheel, they continued traveling narrow city streets and remote dirt roads until he was well into his eighties; getting lost was half the fun.  Andy’s favorite pastimes included tennis, gardening, and camping. He was an avid fan of all sports, especially basketball and tennis. Andy was known for his thoughtfulness to others and his delightful sense of humor, which he maintained to the end of his life. Survived by three children, four grandchildren, a brother, and many nieces and nephews, he was preceded in death by his wife; his daughter, Kate Willingham; his sister, Margaret Bradburn; and three brothers, Tom, John, and Bill. Donations in his memory can be sent to the Family Resource Center (www.frcoxford.org) of Oxford or the Three  Valley Conservation Trust (www.3vct.org) or Miami University.
