Edward Lyon Obituary

**Please note that while the family knows Ed was cherished by many, the reality of increasing cases of Covid-19 looms.  Anyone whose own health is compromised, as well as anyone with a fever or other symptoms or who has been in direct contact with someone who is sick in the past 14 days, are asked to honor the health of our family and loved ones by staying home.  We are certain Ed would not want his memorial to result in further heartache and pain.  Strict social distancing and face covering adherence is requested.  The funeral home occupancy will be limited to 50 persons at a time and hand sanitizing stations are available.

Ask anyone who knew him, they will tell you Ed Lyon was a good man, a true friend and loved by many.

In his seventy years on Earth, Ed was an adoring husband for 49 years to Bonny, an amazing father to Chris, Jeff (Jordan) and Denise (Chris Ulland) and the fun-loving grandpa of Brandon, Damon, Joel, Jacob, Ty, Casey, Alayna, Colt, Kaleesi, Ireland and Chance.  He was a doting son to Ruth until the time of her death, and loving brother to Jane and Betty, who passed before him and to Jim Lyon, Jean (Robert) Sweet and Shadow (Tim) Gleason, who are left to carry on.

Ed had an outgoing soul; give him ten minutes and you would no longer be strangers.   A trait, paired with a keen sense of humor, that would serve him well in his more than thirty years as a sales rep with the Xerox Corporation.  He made friends easily, many of those friendships would hold up to the test of time and span decades.  He was from the generation where you stayed with a company if the work was rewarding and the people you worked with felt like home.  The folks at Xerox will tell you that he was not just their friend, he was family.

Ed was a lifelong learner, inquisitive from an early age.  He was a self-taught fabricator, an avid RC car hobbyist, a computer and video game champion, an architect of backyard storage “sheds”, a garage-tinkering motorcycle mechanic, a small motor restorationist, and an above average patio bricklayer.  In recent years, after one of Bonny’s craft show adventures, he set out to become a copper wire jewelry maker because, why not?  When Ed found a challenge, he did his research. Then he did some more research and then more.  When the plan was finalized on paper, the next project began.  Sometimes because it was practical and sometimes just to prove he could.

Among his many joys in life he loved photography, a good book, or patiently teaching a life skill to others.  Ed loved watching NASCAR, listening to smooth jazz and seeing a good movie.  He felt alive with two wheels under him and the wind in his face.  As a young man he enjoyed hang gliding and rifle shooting.  He had a love of classic automobiles and just about any engine.  Through the years Ed begrudgingly became an animal lover, won over by the many pets living in and outside the house.  When he realized he could no longer fight it, he gave in and even embraced his and Bonny’s crazy cat life.

Ed’s biggest life accomplishment above all was his family.  He and Bonny married in 1971 and although it may sound trite, they truly shared a lifetime of love and laughter.  Through the normal ups and downs of life’s challenges, their devotion to each other remained steadfast.  He was an awesome dad, swelling with pride for the achievements of his children and grandchildren.  The role of cheerleader was one he happily assumed whether at Chris’ Marine Corps graduation, Jeff’s high school wrestling matches or Denise’s gymnastics meets.  Not to mention any number of soccer games, band concerts, rodeos, dance recitals, graduations, and football games of his eleven grandkids.  He loved nothing more than to see their successes and happiness.

Ed passed from this life on Saturday, October 24, 2020.  He was surrounded by his family and was kept comfortable thanks to the amazing professionals at the Christ Hospital CVICU.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the Christian Village at Mt. Healthy Compassionate Care Fund.
