John William Rust

Colerain Twp. - John William Rust, better known as Jack Rust, passed away on June 23rd, 2020. He was 84 years old.  Jack is survived by three daughters, Cynthia (J.R.) Flatt, Sage Walker, and Kathryn Rust, four grandchildren, Van Walker, Sara Flatt, Andrew Walker and Justin Flatt, three great grandsons, Ari, Arlen, and Artavius. He was also survived by four siblings, Karen Rust Jarvis, Don (Sharon) Rust, Howard (Charlene) Rust and Carl (Robin) Rust. Jack was born in Connersville, IN.  He graduated from Owensboro (KY) Senior High School in 1953. Jack served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He earned his B.A. from Brescia College in Owensboro in 1960, and his M.Ed from the University of Cincinnati in 1975.  In 1959, Jack went to work for the Internal Revenue Service and was selected to be a part of one of the first classes of computer programmers for the IRS.  He had a long and distinguished career as a data processing and information systems senior manager. He worked at the University of Cincinnati for 10 years and later went on to work for Southwestern Ohio Regional Computer Consortium (SWORCC) which provided services to both U.C. and Miami University. Jack left U.C. to work for Systems & Computer Technology Corporation (SCT), a nation-wide company providing computer and information systems management and consulting services to colleges and universities. Jack was active all of his life in charitable/volunteer activities including fair housing, anti-HUAC, anti-Vietnam War, big brother, adult literacy tutor, small business consultant, children’s advocate in court, senior health insurance counselor, and airport information worker. He lived in California for many years. After retirement Jack moved back to Cincinnati in order to live near his two older daughters and their families.  He loved sports and was an avid reader of fiction.  He did family history research and played bridge and video poker on his computer. He walked every morning at Northgate Mall.  He especially loved his role as “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He loved to travel and made many trips within the U.S. and in Europe. A Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 14th at 1pm at the Bevis Cedar Grove Cemetery, 3766 Dry Ridge Road, Cincinnati, OH 45252. A Celebration of Life ceremony has been planned for August 2nd, 2021.  For details please contact: kathrynrust@gmail.com.
